Three people were hurt on Saturday in a snowmobile accident near Ind. 2, just outside Westville, in LaPorte County, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

According to the DNR, at the time of the early-morning accident the three “were operating their snowmobiles on unfamiliar private property which they did not have permission to ride upon.”

Investigators said that “the operators were launched as far as 45 feet from the ditch while their snowmobiles rolled several times.”

All three riders were injured. David Pilarski, 20, of Westville, suffered a concussion, broken right femur, and broken nose; Charlie Herrold, 18, of LaPorte, a broken clavicle; and Sam Thompson, 22, also of LaPorte, a broken nose, the DNR said.

The three were wearing their helmets.

Pilarski and Herrold were transported to St. Anthony’s Medical Center for treatment, the DNR said.

The DNR urged snowmobilers to obtain permission from the landowner before operating on private property and to register your off-road vehicle at your local Bureau of Motor Vehicle Office.
