The Chesterton woman injured in a two-vehicle accident on Saturday on 1100N has died.

Teresa M. Lawhead, 51, was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m. Monday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office told the Chesterton Tribune this morning.

According to the Chesterton Police Department, at 2:32 p.m. on Saturday, Lawhead was riding her 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle westbound on 1100N when Harry L. Waelde, 48, of Valparaiso, traveling eastbound on 1100N, attempted to turn left in front of her onto northbound Greenmeadow Lane.

Lawhead’s motorcycle struck the rear passenger’s side of Waelde’s 2005 Kia Spectra.

Lawhead, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from her motorcycle and came to rest in the eastbound lane of 1100N, west of the intersection of Greenmeadow Lane, police said.

The CPD said that Lawhead, unresponsive, and bleeding from her head, arms, and legs, was transported to the trauma center at Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary and then later to Advocate Christ.

Waelde, who escaped injury, showed no signs of intoxication and registered a blood alcohol content of .000 percent on a routine portable breath test.

He told police that “he did not see (Lawhead) approaching from the opposite direction before making the left turn.”
