The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is investigating the drowning of a teen in Lake Michigan on Monday, off Washington Park in Michigan City.

The victim was identified as Travis Mensha, 14, of Michigan City.

According to the DNR, at 6:11 p.m. Mensha and another boy--Joseph Zaknoun, 14, also of Michigan City--were swimming near the break wall when they began to struggle. Zaknoun was “able to self-rescue to the nearby break wall,” the DNR said, but Mensha “disappeared under the water approximately 175 feet from shore.”

Divers with the Michigan City Fire Department, the DNR, and the U.S. Coast Guard undertook a search for Mensha and succeeded in recovering him at 7:07 p.m., the DNR said. Mensha was rushed to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The DNR is investigating the incident.
