A car stolen in
Hammond was torched and abandoned early this morning on Tremont Road, the
Chesterton Fire Department said.
Lt. Brandon Smith
told the Chesterton Tribune today that the CFD was dispatched at 2:55
a.m., after a passer-by observed the burning car--a 2013 Chrysler 300--on
Tremont Road just south of U.S. Highway 20.
“It was fully
involved,” Smith said. “Pretty much all gone when we got there. It had been
burning awhile before anyone noticed it.”
Firefighters used
an entire tank’s worth of water, 750 gallons, and a couple of gallons of
foam for good measure to extinguish the blaze.
Porter Police, also
responding to the scene, said that the vehicle was facing north and had been
backed into position on the side of the road. Both driver’s side doors had
been left open.
Police subsequently
determined that the vehicle had been stolen from a Hammond resident who was
unaware of the theft until advised by the Lake County Sheriff’s Police said.
The CFD cleared the
scene at 3:39 a.m.
