The Speedway gas station at 5011 Central Ave. was robbed at gunpoint early
this morning, Portage Police said.
According to police, at 3:02 a.m. a male subject entered the store, pointed
a black handgun at the clerk, and ordered him to fill with money a
draw-string style bag which the suspect had brought with him. The clerk did
as he was instructed, taking money from three cash registers as the suspect
followed behind him holding the bag.
The suspect then ordered the clerk to lay on the floor behind the counter.
The clerk did so, then—on hearing the business doors open and close—he
pushed the alarm panic button and a few moments later called 911.
The suspect was described as a white male, 5’ 10’’ to 6’ 0’’ in height,
wearing all black or dark clothing, a hoodie sweatshirt with the hood up,
possibly overalls, and a black bandana covering his face with a white
thin-lined pattern.
Surveillance footage corroborated the clerk’s account and also showed the
suspect wearing gloves and taking a pack of cigarettes on his way out.
It was not known in what direction the robber fled the scene or whether he
was on foot or in a vehicle, police said.
