The driver killed
on Sunday night on I-80/94--in congestion caused by an earlier crash
involving a man subsequently charged with OWI--was a South Haven man, the
Lake County Coroner’s Office told the Chesterton Tribune today.
The victim has been
identified as John Armstrong, 46.
eastbound on I-80/94 when his 1995 Lincoln was rear-ended by a motorist
traveling at a high rate of speed, causing the Lincoln to spin into the next
lane and burst into flames,” the Indiana State Police said. “Attempts were
made to remove the driver of the Lincoln. However, they were unsuccessful
due to the fire. The driver of the Lincoln was declared dead at the scene.”
The ISP identified
the driver who rear-ended Armstrong as Shenay Neal, 44, of Crown Point.
After rear-ending Armstrong’s Lincoln, Neal continued straight and
rear-ended a third vehicle, a semi-tractor trailer, operated by Lance A.
Forbus, 32, of Dallas, Texas. Neal and Forbus were both transported to
hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The incident which
caused the backup in the first place was the arrest of Anthony Van Norris,
35, of Merrillville, who police said was charged with operating while
intoxicated after crashing his car at the 2.2 mile marker. The fatal
accident was the first of three which occurred down the line from Van
Norris’ crash and arrest: the second involved seven vehicles and the third
involved two vehicles.
