The Porter County Sheriff’s Police released a statement Thursday on the circumstances surrounding the death of a 12 year-old who drowned earlier this week in the swimming pool at Fairhaven Baptist Church, 86 East Oakhill Road in Chesterton.

PCSP Public Information Office Jamie Erow said detectives are attempting to gather further information from approximately 6-7 juveniles that were in the pool at the time of the incident, to find out what occurred prior to and during the incident.

Erow said the indoor pool, which appeared to be a standard 50-yard pool, is five feet deep on both ends and three feet deep in the middle.

There were no lifeguards on duty at the time of the drowning, Erow said, but there were two adults in the pool area. Henderson was brought over to the side where he was removed from the water and CPR was immediately initiated by one of the adults.

Erow said the investigation could take time and the PCSP will provide more details when they are available.

Police and fire departments were called to the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in response to a possible drowning at the pool. Davion Henderson, of Chicago, was found unresponsive in water that was approximately three feet deep while he and other members of his home church, Corner Stone Baptist of Hyde Park, were visiting Fairhaven for a 4th of July celebration.

According to a statement released Wednesday by Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris, Henderson was transported to Porter Regional Hospital by Porter EMS at 5:03 p.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m. Harris said an autopsy was ordered and results are pending.
