A service dog fled the scene of a two-vehicle crash on an I-80/94 off-ramp in Gary early this morning and was still missing at press time, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 2:30 a.m. Brandon Jones of Merrillville and Rodney Jones of Sheboygan, Wis., collided on the exit ramp to Grant Street. Rodney Jones’ 2017 Ford Fiesta overturned and came to rest in the south ditch, police said, and Jack, his service dog--trained to assist the hearing impaired--ran from the scene.

Jack was described as a small brown and white terrier.

“It is believed that following the crash the dog may have run onto or near Grant Street as he was not located on the interstate,” police said.

The drivers and passengers in the crash were transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
