An elderly man was assaulted and robbed on Friday at the Hammond South Shore commuter train station, the NICTD Transit Police said.

According to police, at 8:39 a.m. an 84-year-old man had just purchased a newspaper inside the train station at 4531 Hohman Ave. and was walking on the boarding platform when he was physically assaulted and robbed of his wallet.

Police said that the victim sustained minor injuries in the incident but refused medical treatment.

The suspect was described as a black male in his mid-twenties to early thirties, tall and stocky, wearing a sleeveless gray tee-shirt and dark jeans with embroidered designs sewn into the rear pockets.

The suspect fled on foot southbound on Johnson Ave., where a Hammond Police Department K-9 unit was unable to perform a successful track.

Anyone with information about the robbery or the identity of the suspect is asked to call the NICTD Transit Police at (219) 398-6000. All calls are kept confidential.
