Semi vs Kia on US 30 three hurt

A semi-truck collided with a passenger vehicle near Tony’s Saddle Shop, 365 E. U.S. 30, in Washington Township early Saturday morning, Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

According to police, at 3 a.m. officers were dispatched to the scene after the driver of the semi and a passenger in the other vehicle called for help and upon arrival, officers observed the front of a black 2016 Kia four-door wedged under a 2017 Fontaine Truck Equipment Co. trailer.

Police said the caller from the Kia was the rear passenger, a 13-year old female, who reported that her mother, 35, and sister, 10, were trapped in the vehicle under the trailer. Washington Township Fire and Valparaiso Fire Department assisted with the extrication of the two occupants, and Lutheran Air was called for transport of the driver of the Kia, who was conscious and alert but was transported to South Bend for leg and back pain, according to police.

Police said the two juveniles were transported to Porter Regional Hospital for minor injuries, and the semi driver, 44-year old male Shawn Baker of North Carolina, was uninjured.

Also assisting at the scene was Green’s Towing and Indiana State Highway. Police report the details of the crash are not immediately available.
