A semi-tanker rollover on Tuesday afternoon closed the entrance ramp to the
Indiana Toll Road at Ind. 49, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 3:15 p.m. trucker Dale L. Kyle, 52, of Gary, was
northbound on Ind. 49 when he attempted to turn left onto the Toll Road
entrance ramp. Police said that Kyle took the turn too fast, causing the
70,000 pounds of liquid truck wash in his tanker to shift and the rig to
roll onto its side.
The entrance ramp was closed until the tanker’s contents could be offloaded
to another tanker and the rig righted, police said. The Toll Road exit ramp
remained open.
Kyle—who was uninjured—was issued a citation for unsafe lane movement,
police said. His rig, owned by Beaver Oil Company of Hodgkins, Ill.,
sustained “substantial damage.”
Chesterton firefighters responded to the scene and applied about 100 pound
of oil dry to a spill of engine oil, Capt. Tony Coslet told the
Chesterton Tribune. None of the liquid truck wash was lost, however, nor
any diesel fuel, he said.
