A semi collided with a concrete barrier wall along the north side of U.S. 20 east of Mineral Springs Road and subsequently collided with a tree Monday after the driver allegedly fell asleep, Porter Police said.

According to police, at 6:42 a.m. Robert K. Averill, 64, of Hortonville, Wis., became drowsy while eastbound on U.S. 20 and his semi crossed the center of the road and collided with the barrier wall for 890 feet until it came to a stop once striking a tree.

Police said the vehicle was extensively damaged with the roof being torn from the vehicle. The vehicle’s front axle was torn loose and the trailer had its frame broken in several places, police said.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Averill was taken to Porter Hospital Valparaiso Campus where he was treated and subsequently released.

Police closed lanes on U.S. 20 until the truck and trailer were removed. Total damage to the semi was estimated by police at up to $100,000.
