The Porter County Sheriff’s Police is warning folks not to disclose personal
information to callers identifying themselves as U.S. Postal Service
employees.
According to police, on Friday an elderly Pine Township resident reported
receiving a call purportedly from a USPS employee at the Michigan City post
office, who told her that her address and date of birth were needed in order
to send her a package.
The resident did give the caller the requested information “and it wasn’t
until later that she realized how suspicious the call was,” police said.
The investigating officer determined that the call had been made in Texas
and when he tried calling the number himself there was no answer and no
voice-mail.
A check on the Internet determined that the phone number in question is
associated with a scam, with numerous reports “occurring all over,” police
said.
