Porter Township man dies in riding mower accident

A Porter Township man died over the weekend after his riding mower rolled on top of him, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris is reporting.

The victim was identified as Thomas Wilkening, 49.

According to a statement released by Harris, at 12:50 a.m. Sunday the Coroner’s Office responded to a residence on C.R. 450S to investigate a death involving a riding mower. Family members advised that Wilkening was last seen at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday while mowing around a pond near the back of the property and out of sight of the residence.

Later in the evening, Harris said, on seeing lights burning on the pole barn, the family members went to check on Wilkening and found him at the base of a culvert with the zero-turn Husqvarna mower on top of him.

Wilkening was pronounced deceased at 12:50 a.m.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Police and other agencies are investigating the accident.
