A South Bend resident was arrested Tuesday on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily injury after a vehicle crash at the corner of U.S. 20 and Howe Road, Porter Police said.

According to police, at 6:19 p.m. Steven Donnell Gaines II, 23, was seen heading west on U.S. 20 in his vehicle after witnesses reported to police that he was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Witnesses described his vehicle as a gold Toyota Corolla and advised that Gaines had entered westbound U.S. 20 from northbound Mineral Springs Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a second vehicle on the rear passenger side, police said.

Police said that the suspect vehicle was located and stopped by Burns Harbor Police about ten minutes later traveling westbound on Interstate 94 in a construction area.

Police said Gaines advised he fled because he was currently on parole for robbery and did not want to go back to prison.

Gaines’ vehicle had major front end damage and was missing the front bumper, police said.

Gaines was transported to Porter County Jail.

Police said that a passenger in the victim vehicle complained of hip pain and was transported to a medical facility by Porter EMS for treatment.

Police estimated the total damage of Gaines’ 2003 Toyota Camry and the victim vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Armada, at up to $10,000.
