No one was injured
on Friday in a fire in a second-story unit at the Orchard Apartments off
North Waverly Road, the Porter Fire Department said.

Craig told the Chesterton Tribune this morning that, at 3:53 p.m.,
the PFD responded to the 1405 building after a maintenance worker--called to
investigate a bathroom fan when a tenant reported hearing the crackling of
flames--discovered an active fire.
Also responding to
the scene were the Chesterton, Burns Harbor, and Portage FDs. Disregarded

Craig said that the
entire building was evacuated--a dozen units--while firefighters used
approximately 200 gallons of water to douse the fire. Firefighters then
performed overhaul to ensure there’d been no extension into the attic.
