No one was injured on Friday in a fire in a second-story unit at the Orchard Apartments off North Waverly Road, the Porter Fire Department said.

Deputy Chief Jay Craig told the Chesterton Tribune this morning that, at 3:53 p.m., the PFD responded to the 1405 building after a maintenance worker--called to investigate a bathroom fan when a tenant reported hearing the crackling of flames--discovered an active fire.

Also responding to the scene were the Chesterton, Burns Harbor, and Portage FDs. Disregarded while en route where the Liberty Township and Beverly Shores FDs.

Craig said that the entire building was evacuated--a dozen units--while firefighters used approximately 200 gallons of water to douse the fire. Firefighters then performed overhaul to ensure there’d been no extension into the attic.

Craig estimated damage to the structure at $10,000 and that to contents--mostly smoke damage--at another $5,000.

The PFD cleared the scene at 6:30 p.m.
