The Porter Fire
Departmentís Dive/Rescue Team mustered on Thursday after a boat crashed
against the breakwall at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site at Indiana
Dunes National Lakeshore.
Deputy Fire Chief
Jay Craig told the Chesterton Tribune this morning that accident
occurred shortly after 7 p.m., when a man and woman operating a 30-plus-foot
boat ran it up against the breakwall in the small harbor area at the mouth
of Burns Waterway.
Neither was injured
in the incident but their boat was taking on water, Craig said.
The PFD responded
with its inflatable, assisting the Portage Fire Department with its fire
boat, and together the two FDs succeeded in towing the boat off the
breakwall and beaching it at the mouth of Burns Waterway.
The man and woman,
for their part, were taken safely aboard Portageís fire boat and given a
ride to shore, Craig added
The PFD cleared the
scene around 9 p.m.
