The Porter County Sheriff’s Police is seeking the public’s help in identifying the man who fondled a young girl on Friday, June 13, in a van parked in the Pines Park in Pine Township.

According to police, at 7 p.m. a 12-year-old girl was walking on U.S. Highway 12 from the Blackhawk Motel to Virk’s Mart when, a short distance from the motel, a van pulled up next to her on U.S. 12. The driver of the van then coerced the girl into the vehicle, drove to Pines Park on Birch Street, and after parking the van fondled the girl, police said.

When finished, the suspect dropped the girl off at Virk’s Mart.

The suspect was described as a black male, medium toned, 35 to 40 years of age, 5’ 8’’ to 5’ 10’’ in height, heavy set, clean shaven, and wearing prescription eyeglasses. At the time of the incident the suspect was wearing a short-sleeved blue collar shirt, beige shorts, a silver watch, and black tennis shoes.

The suspect’s vehicle was described as a full-size conversion van, tan in color, with a brown stripe on the side. Inside the van the victim observed a red wheel chair and possibly a handicap-type ramp on the back passenger’s side. The van is also believed to have blue registration plates, possibly handicap plates.

Anyone with information about the suspect vehicle or the suspect is asked to call Detective Lt. Eric Jones at (219) 477-3136. Anonymous tips can be called in to WeTip at (800) 782-7463.
