A Gary resident who Portage Police said snatched a woman’s purse on Tuesday at the Wal-Mart at 6087 U.S. Highway 6 was jumped by other shoppers and detained until an officer arrived on the scene.

Charles L. Reed III, 19, was arrested on charges of theft and battery.

According to police, at 4:38 p.m. a witness reported that he was shopping when he heard a woman yell “Help, help, he’s got my purse!” The shopper then saw a male subject in a red coat with a purse in his hands, prompting the shopper to wrap “his arms around the back of Mr. Reed to prevent him from escaping with the victim’s purse,” police said.

Other shoppers also assisted and at some point the first shopper was struck in the face by Reed, police said.

Reed was taken into custody, transported to Porter Regional Hospital for treatment of arm pain--sustained in the altercation--and then booked into the Porter County Jail, police said.
