A motorcyclist died early this morning while being pursued by Portage Police after rear-ending a semi-tractor trailer on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as Theodore D. Hickman, 21, of Portage.

According to police, at 12:50 a.m. Hickman was westbound on I-80/94 “at a high rate of speed” when, near Lake Station, he rear-ended a semi in the process of changing lanes. Police said that Hickman was ejected from his 1998 Honda motorcycle, which came to rest against a median wall, police said.

Lifesaving measures were performed at the scene, but Hickman was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary.

“It should be noted that at the time of the crash, the motorcyclist was being actively pursued by the Portage Police Department,” the ISP said. No further information on the incident was available from the ISP and as of deadline the Chesterton Tribune had received none from the Portage PD.

The Burns Harbor Fire Department assisted at the scene.
