Portage man who reported being shot facing possible false informing charge

Back To Front Page

The Portage man who reported being shot outside a Speedway gas station over the weekend could be charged with false informing, after Portage Police said that he lied about where the shooting occurred.

The 33-year-old man initially told police that, at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, he’d been standing outside his vehicle at the Speedway, at U.S. Highway 6 and Swanson Road, when he heard a bang and realized he’d been shot. The man then drove himself to hospital.

Today, however, the PPD said that the shooting actually occurred at an unspecified residence in Portage, where an acquaintance of the man was handling a pistol when it accidentally discharged, hitting the man in the chest.

The man required surgery.

No charge is contemplated against the person in possession of the pistol but a possible charge of false informing against the man who was shot is being reviewed by the Porter County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
