Portage Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the man who robbed the Horizon Bank at gunpoint on Monday.

According to police, at 12:31 p.m. a male subject entered the bank, located at 2650 Willowcreek Road, displayed a black handgun, and was given an undetermined sum of money. The suspect reportedly fled on foot.

No one was injured in the robbery.

Portage police officers responded to area--as did the Lake County Sheriffs Police helicopter--but the suspect was not located.

The suspect was described as a black male, 5’ 6’’ to 5’ 9’’ in height, wearing blue jeans, a black hoodie, and a Rastafarian-style knit cap.

Portage Police Chief Troy Williams told the Chesterton Tribune today that investigators have “solid physical evidence” as well as usable surveillance photos and that he’s hopeful an arrest will be quickly made. “We will exhaust all resources and efforts to locate and arrest this subject,” Williams said.

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the burglary--who may have seen a man matching this description at or near the bank--or who may have seen him getting out of or into a vehicle--is asked to contact Capt. Joe Reynolds at (219) 762-3122.

The FBI, meanwhile, is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the bank robber. Contact the FBI at (219) 769-3719.
