Pole barn fire in Liberty Township

Back To Front Page

No one was hurt in a pole barn fire on Thursday in the 800 block of North Calumet Ave., near Tratebas Road in Liberty Township, the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department is reporting.

According to the LTVFD, firefighters responded to the scene at 6 p.m. and found on their arrival a working fire in a pole barn with heavy smoke at the rear of the structure. Because no easily accessible hydrants are located in the area, Assistant Fire Chief Michael Wineland implemented a tanker plan, but crews “were able to quickly extinguish the fire battling the winter weather in the brisk cold air.”

No one was inside the pole barn at the time of the fire and no firefighters were hurt at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, Fire Chief Brian Duncan said, and is under investigation by the Porter County Fire Investigation Strike Team.

Assisting LTVFD at the scene were the Chesterton, Porter, South Haven, and Washington Township FDs. Also on the scene were the Porter County Sheriff’s Police and Porter Regional Hospital EMS.
