A Pine Township resident was arrested on several charges Saturday after assaulting two individuals and two police officers, Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

According to police at 10:45 p.m. police officers were dispatched to a residence on U.S. 20 to speak with a woman about the mental state of her son, Christopher Battishill, 38, of 624 Old Chicago Road.

Police said they found Battishill at his residence “very unstable” and he threatened to kill the officers if they trespassed on his property. A K9 unit was used to detain Battishill who attempted to attack officers with a long silver bladed sword.

Battishill was taken to Valparaiso Medical Campus for injuries sustained to his left hand where the K9 unit bit him. Battishill assaulted two hospital security officers and two police officers who were trying to subdue him, police said. During this time, Battishill attempted to remove a gun from an officer’s holster and was tazed by police, police said.

Battishill faces four charges of battery, one charge of disarming a law enforcement officer, one charge of intimidation with a deadly weapon, one charge of resisting law enforcement and a charge of disorderly conduct.

After he was medically cleared, Battishill was taken to Porter County Jail.
