An Oak Lawn, Ill., pilot died Thursday when his single-engine airplane crashed at the Porter Regional Airport in Washington Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police is reporting.

The pilot has been identified as Azam J. Zayed. Notification of family was made by the Oak Lawn Police Department, the PCSP said.

Zayed was the Piper Comanche’s only occupant.

The accident occurred at 10:46 a.m. as Zayed was departing the airport, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a brief statement released late on Thursday.

“According to witness statements, shortly after the plane took off there were complications and the pilot was unable to regain control of the aircraft,” Coroner Chuck Harris said in his own statement.

The airplane hit the ground nose first.

The FAA--which was at the scene on Thursday--said that the investigation will be handled by the National Transportation Safety Board. NTSB investigations can last 12 to 18 months.

Also responding to the scene were the Washington Township and Morgan Township fire departments. A flight restriction at the airport was in place through midnight Thursday.
