Phony $100 bills turning up in Valpo

Back To Front Page

The Valparaiso Police Department is investigating a rash of counterfeit $100 bills passed in local businesses.

Those counterfeits proved to be “washed” $10 bills which have been bleached, onto which a $100 bill has been printed by a home printer, police said. Because a genuine bill’s paper has been used, it generally passes the marker test, so businesses need to check the security strip inside the bill. That strip will display the dollar amount of the bill.

Anyone with information on the counterfeits is urged to contact Det. Jason Hamilton at 462-2135 or text a tip to TIP411 (847-411) and enter “Valpo” in the message field prior to sending the tip.
