A Michigan City man
was seriously injured on Friday after being struck by a semi-tractor
trailer, apparently while hitchhiking, along I-94 in Pine Township, the
Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
The victim was
identified as Anthony Roots, 31.
According to the
PCSP, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Roots was walking along the north side of
I-94, by the westbound lanes, when the semi struck him. PCSP Cpl. Ben
McFalls told the Chesterton Tribune that the semi’s operator did
manage to swerve left and brake and that a good Samaritan with medical
background stopped to render first aid at the scene.
previously advised family members that he planed to hitchhike to a local
destination, McFalls said.
Roots was airlifted
from the scene by Memorial Medflight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. His
condition this morning was unknown, McFalls said.
Both the west- and
eastbound lanes of I-94 were closed after the crash. Assisting at the scene
were the Beverly Shores Police and Fire departments, the Washington Township
Volunteer FD, and the Indiana State Police.
