A Michigan City man was seriously injured on Friday after being struck by a semi-tractor trailer, apparently while hitchhiking, along I-94 in Pine Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

The victim was identified as Anthony Roots, 31.

According to the PCSP, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Roots was walking along the north side of I-94, by the westbound lanes, when the semi struck him. PCSP Cpl. Ben McFalls told the Chesterton Tribune that the semi’s operator did manage to swerve left and brake and that a good Samaritan with medical background stopped to render first aid at the scene.

Roots had previously advised family members that he planed to hitchhike to a local destination, McFalls said.

Roots was airlifted from the scene by Memorial Medflight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. His condition this morning was unknown, McFalls said.

Both the west- and eastbound lanes of I-94 were closed after the crash. Assisting at the scene were the Beverly Shores Police and Fire departments, the Washington Township Volunteer FD, and the Indiana State Police.

The accident remains under investigation, McFalls said.
