A 17-year-old Valparaiso boy was detained at the Juvenile Detention Center on Monday after the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said that he punched another boy on the carnival midway at the Porter County Fair.

According to police, at 9;50 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the midway following a report of a disturbance on the midway. On his arrival, the officer observed a 15-year-old Demotte boy “very dazed and confused” and “laying on his back bleeding profusely from his mouth.”

The Demotte boy was subsequently transported by ambulance to Porter Regional Hospital with a laceration to the mouth requiring stitches and a probable concussion, police said.

The Demotte boy was able to tell the officer that he’d been walking around the midway with friends when he made “a disparaging remark questioning the gender and sexuality” of a female in the company of the 17-year-old Valparaiso boy. The latter confronted the Demotte boy about the remark and “demanded” him to “kiss his shoes” to “make everything right,” the police said. The Demotte boy refused to do so, “and the next thing he remembered was waking up on the ground and coughing up blood,” police said.

The Valparaiso boy later surrendered himself to officers and was transported to JDC.
