A Kentucky resident was killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of McCool Road and C.R. 875N in Portage Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

The victim was identified as Lisa Barnes, 56.

According to police, at 11:18 a.m. Barnes’ granddaughter, a 17-year-old girl also from Kentucky, was eastbound on C.R. 875N when she failed to yield right-of-way at the intersection of McCool Road and collided with a second vehicle northbound on McCool Road.

The girl’s 2008 Chrysler Town & Country was struck on the passenger’s side by a 2015 Jeep Cherokee driven by Celenia Schmitt, 37, of Portage, police said.

Barnes, riding in the front passenger’s seat, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The 17-year-old girl driving the Town & Country escaped serious injury. The PCSP has not released her name.

The three other passengers in the Town & Country--all of them from Kentucky as well--were injured, one of them seriously, a 14-year-old boy who was airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago police said. The other two passengers, a 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl, were treated for minor injuries at Porter Regional Hospital, police said.

Schmitt escaped injury, police added.
