A Wheeler man was seriously injured on Thursday in a one-vehicle accident on Ind. 49 in Liberty Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

Sgt. Larry LaFlower told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 10:40 a.m., Robert Oestreich, 67, was southbound on Ind. 49, in the area of C.R. 600N, when he lost control of his pickup truck, left the roadway, entered the median, and rolled. Oestreich, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was then ejected from the pickup truck into the northbound lanes, LaFlower said.

Oestreich came to rest on the northbound shoulder and does not appear to have been struck by any northbound vehicles but he sustained incapacitating injuries to his head and torso, LaFlower said.

Oestreich was transported to Porter Regional Hospital.

Traffic in the area of the crash was restricted for around an hour.

LaFlower did say that the light snowfall Thursday morning contributed to multiple slide-offs on Ind. 49.
