Porter County Sheriff’s Police officers responded to a rural Kouts residence on Monday after a 17-year-old boy was reported to have sustained a gunshot wound.

The boy is a Boone Grove High School senior who was home alone at the time of the incident, after his family went to Valparaiso for a short time. When his mother and sister returned, shortly before 9 a.m., “they discovered him lying in his bed with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police said.

The boy was still breathing and was transported by a University of Chicago Aeromedical Network helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., where his condition was unknown, police said.

“Family members indicated to Porter County detectives that the victim suffered from depression,” police said. “Detectives do not believe there was any foul play surrounding this incident.”
