A woman was killed and two others—including a child—were seriously injured
in a two-vehicle accident on Tuesday on U.S. Highway 20 in Pine Township,
the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
The names of none of those involved have yet been released, Sgt. Larry
LaFlower told the Chesterton Tribune today.
LaFlower gave this account of the crash, which occurred at 4:29 p.m.
The driver of a 1999 Ford Taurus was eastbound on U.S. 20, in the area of
County Line Road, when he lost control on the icy, slushy road surface and
crossed the center line, where he collided with a 2003 Trailblazer westbound
on U.S. 20.
A passenger in the Taurus, a 24-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the
scene, LaFlower said. The driver of the Taurus was reported in critical
condition at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, while a child riding in the
rear seat of the Taurus was reported in stable condition at a children’s
hospital in Indianapolis.
The driver of the Trailblazer and her three passengers—including an
8-year-old, a 3-year-old, and an infant—were transported to Saint Anthony
Memorial Hospital in Michigan City with non-life threatening injuries,
LaFlower said.
Contributing to the crash were slick weather-related road conditions,
LaFlower added.
