Back To Front Page

A stolen vehicle rolled into the Burns Waterway early Tuesday morning after the two persons riding in it jumped out while being pursued by law enforcement, the Ogden Dunes Police Department is reporting.

According to police, at 4:08 a.m. a two-man ODPD unit attempted to stop a vehicle for a moving violation. The driver, however, ignored the unitís emergency lights and siren and instead drove into the Marina Shores neighborhood of Portage, where they left the roadway before leaping out of the vehicle, police said.

The vehicle continued on, entering Burns Waterway and sinking, police said.

Following a brief foot pursuit--in which Burns Harbor, Porter, and Portage police officers assisted--the suspects were apprehended and taken into custody, police said. The passenger was transported immediately to Porter County Jail. The driver, complaining of neck pain, was examined at Porter Portage Hospital Campus and subsequently released, at which time he too was transported to PCJ, police said.

Further investigation determined that the vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Cherokee, had been stolen in LaPorte during the late evening hours on Monday and that its owners were unaware of the theft until being informed by law enforcement, police said.

The following charges are pending against the driver: felony theft; felony resisting law enforcement; speeding; reckless driving; driving while suspended; and leaving the scene of an accident.

A charge of resisting law enforcement is pending against the passenger.

Divers from the Portage Fire Departmentís Marine Unit located the Jeep and assisted Joeís Towing in recovering it from Burns Waterway.
