NIPSCO: Wet and heavy snow leaves 1000s in NWI in the dark

At the peak of Sunday’s snow storm, 11,000 customers of the Northern Indiana Public Service Company were without power--many hundreds of them in Duneland--while overall more than 20,000 customers at one time or another were in the dark.

“The outages were due mainly to varying damage from heavily weighted tree branches and power lines, broken poles, and damage from cars sliding off roadways into power equipment,” NIPSCO spokesman Nick Meyer told the Chesterton Tribune today.

Meyer was unable to say what exactly caused the outage which affected INDOT’s traffic signal at Ind. 49 and 1100N. Street Commissioner John Schnadenberg guessed that the light was down for around three hours. He added that the Town of Chesterton’s traffic signal at 1100N and 100E remained in operation despite the outage because it’s been outfitted with a battery backup.

Meanwhile, the Chesterton Fire Department reported that sometime after power was restored to a neighborhood in the 300 block Jefferson Ave. it went out again, when a transformer blew.

A total of 345 individual outages requiring repairs occurred during the storm, Meyer noted. “Some of those cases only have a handful of customers tied to them,” he said, “while some may have a few hundred.”

As of this morning, some 1,600 customers were still in the dark, Meyer added. “Current outages are primarily located in the northwestern portion of Indiana, including large concentrations in Gary, Lake Station, and Portage. While many of these remaining customers will be restored throughout the morning and early afternoon, there may be some individual outages that last into this evening.”

“All available resources are currently focused on restoration efforts,” Meyer said. “NIPSCO understands that any service outage is an inconvenience, especially during extreme weather conditions. And NIPSCO crews working on the storm thank customers for their patience and understanding during the restoration efforts.”
