A Michigan City resident was arrested Friday on charges of identity deception and false reporting after a tattoo around his neck revealed his identity during a traffic stop in Pine Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

According to police, at 9:42 a.m. Sami Kanaci, 30, was stopped in the area of CR 500E and U.S. 20 for crossing left of center.

Police said Kanaci appeared nervous and was speaking very fast when he advised he was trying to retrieve a baby bottle for his son which caused him to swerve. Kanaci also said his name was Nuzret Kanaci and his license had been stolen a few months ago with his wallet, police said.

Police said a computer check listed Nuzret Kanaci as having a valid license but they also located a booking photo of Sami Kanaci with “a slew of tattoos” including the word “PAIN” around his neck. Kanaci was listed as Driving While Suspended.

The officer requested that Kanaci pull down his zipped-up hoodie covering his neck which revealed the tattoo, police said. Kanaci advised he used his brother’s name to avoid going to jail, police said.

Kanaci was transported to Porter County Jail.
