A Crown Point
motorcyclist was arrested Wednesday on a charge of reckless driving after
being clocked well in excess of 100 miles per hour on I-80/94 in Lake
County, the Indiana State Police said.
police, at 8:10 a.m. Zachary M. Babich, 19, was eastbound in the far left
lane of I-80/94 when, at the Burr Street exit, he passed a trooper at “an
extremely high rate of speed.”
Police said that
Babich moved to the right exit lane to Grant Street but instead of exiting
continued eastbound on the right shoulder, passing numerous vehicles. Babich
then shifted left, continuing to pass vehicles “by splitting lanes” and
moving “in and out of traffic,” police said.
following Babich with lights and siren activated, increased his own speed to
130 mph, until the latter topped out at 135 mph, police said. The trooper
“also paced the motorcycle at 125 mph for just under a mile,” police added.
When stopped just
west of I-65 and asked why he was going so fast, Babich “stated that he was
headed to work for training,” police said.
transported to Porter County Jail and his motorcycle impounded.
