A motorcyclist was seriously injured Friday in a two-vehicle accident on Ind. 49, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 9:24 p.m. John V. Peterson, 88, of Naples, Fla., was northbound on Ind. 49 when he attempted to turn left onto East Oakhill Road and collided with a motorcyclist southbound on Ind. 49.

The motorcyclist was identified as William C. Hood, 65, of Jackson Township.

Hood was ejected from the motorcycle. Police said that Hood sustained a “visible broken left leg and left foot with large lacerations along his leg” as well as “visible redness on his entire abdominal area.”

Hood was transported to Porter Regional Hospital and then airlifted for further treatment to an unspecified hospital, police said.

Peterson advised police that he didn’t see Hood “until it was too late.”

Police estimated total damage to Peterson’s 1999 Mercedes Benz and Hood’s 2013 Harley Davidson FSS at up to $5,000.
