The two Washington Township children reported missing on Monday morning have been found safe, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police is reporting.

According to police, the 9-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl came out of hiding when they saw a citizen walking the perimeter of Victory Christian Academy at 360N 325E in Washington Township, not far from their home in the 300 block of Streamwood Drive.

The children subsequently told officers that they’d been hiding in a pine tree near the school and left their bags under some leaves.

Over 100 officers from multiple agencies participated in the search, which included K-9 units, helicopter, and drones: Porter County Search and Rescue; the Valparaiso Police Department; the Indiana State Police; the Lake County Sheriff’s Police Eagle 1 helicopter; the FBI; the Washington Township Fire Department; Indiana Conservation Officers; the Porter County Emergency Management Agency and its mobile command center; the Portage Police Department; the Hobart Police Department; the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Police; and Porter County Central Communications.

“We are grateful for all the concerns from area residents, the sharing on social media, the media for helping us to spread the information, and the food and water that came to the Washington Township Fire Department to keep our crews hydrated and fueled,” the PCSP said. “We are pleased with the happy outcome. Everyone goes home safe.”
