A Florida man working with the carnival at the Porter County Jail was taken into custody early this morning after a 13-year-old girl--also associated with the carnival--accused him of sexual assaulting her, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

The man has been identified as James Todd, 24.

According to police, at 2 a.m. officers responded to the Fairgrounds to interview the girl and her mother, both of whom travel with the carnival. In the meantime, the PCSP received an additional call, this one of a physical disturbance at the Fairgrounds, which reportedly occurred after several carnival workers--hearing of the accusation--confronted Todd, police said.

Todd was treated for minor injuries at Porter Regional Hospital and released, police said.

Todd was subsequently transported to the Porter County Jail on a preliminary charge of Level 1 child molesting.

“Todd has been uncooperative with jail staff and they have not been able to process him for booking,” police said. The Porter County Fair’s last day is Saturday.
