An Ohio man who
reportedly didn’t know how to swim drowned in Lake Michigan on Sunday after
falling off a sandbar, off the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site at
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Department of Natural Resources identified the victim as Salomon C.
Martinez, 30, of Cincinnati.
Martinez had been
in the water with friends late in the afternoon and was last seen on a
sandbar, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune
today. “Witnesses saw Mr. Martinez go off the sandbar and under the water.
It is believed that Mr. Martinez did not know how to swim.”
Portage and Porter
firefighters located Martinez underwater at a depth of approximately six
feet and transported him to Porter Regional Hospital, where he was
pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m. “due to asphyxiation due to drowning,” Harris

authorities described as “rough water,” the Associated Press was reporting
