An Ohio man who reportedly didn’t know how to swim drowned in Lake Michigan on Sunday after falling off a sandbar, off the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources identified the victim as Salomon C. Martinez, 30, of Cincinnati.

Martinez had been in the water with friends late in the afternoon and was last seen on a sandbar, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune today. “Witnesses saw Mr. Martinez go off the sandbar and under the water. It is believed that Mr. Martinez did not know how to swim.”

Portage and Porter firefighters located Martinez underwater at a depth of approximately six feet and transported him to Porter Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m. “due to asphyxiation due to drowning,” Harris said.

The results of a routine toxicology screen are pending, Harris added.

Two Drownings in Michigan

Meanwhile, in Grand Haven, Mich., two other swimmers drowned on Sunday in Lake Michigan, in what authorities described as “rough water,” the Associated Press was reporting today.

People formed human chains along the shores of Lake Michigan to rescue swimmers in rough water,” the AP said.

A 64-year-old man and a 20-year-old man drowned while three others were hospitalized after being rescued, the AP said.
