A motorist was injured on Sunday morning and a NIPSCO pole snapped in a roll-over accident on C.R. 1050N, the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department is reporting.

According to the LTVFD, at 11:30 a.m. a vehicle was westbound on C.R. 1050N when, between C.R. 150W and C.R. 200W, it left the roadway to the north, then flipped and rolled, hitting the NIPSCO pole before coming to rest on its passenger’s side.

With energized power lines hanging over the vehicle, however, firefighters and EMS personnel were forced to wait on scene for a NIPSCO crew to arrive and cut the power before beginning rescue efforts, the LTVFD said. “NIPSCO was immediately notified” but the crew “arrived almost an hour after the request to de-energize the lines.”

Firefighters subsequently extricated the motorist through the front windshield. The LTVFD said that the vehicle’s airbags did deploy but that the motorist sustained multiple injuries and was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary.
