Local woman's cause of death determined to be drug overdose

Porter County Sheriff’s Police have determined that a 24-year-old Chesterton woman who was found dead in a Lake Eliza home on August 22, 2004, died as a result of a drug overdose.

The victim was Valerie L. McConnell, who resided at 2102 Hawthorne Ln., Chesterton. She was discovered deceased in a bedroom at a friend’s home, located on McCurahan St. in Porter Twp.

The homeowner told police McConnell had asked to stay the night and, when he checked on her the next morning on Aug. 22, discovered she was not breathing. Medics responded to the scene along with Sheriff’s Police and it was determined the victim was deceased.

The toxicology report from an autopsy performed on the victim showed her death was due to respiratory failure and synergistic drug interaction. The certificate of death listed significant levels of cocaine, methadone, cannabincids, ethanol, and a toxic level of benzoylecgonine (metabolized cocaine) in her system.
