Liberty Township resident Marjorie Ann Summers, whose obituary appears
elsewhere in today’s Chesterton Tribune, died after injuries sustained in a
car crash on Sept. 7 in Gary, police said.
Gary Police said that at 3:45 p.m., Summers, 76 E. U.S. 6, was traveling
northbound through the Buchanan Street and 4th Avenue intersection, when she
was struck by a westbound vehicle driven by Denika Kimbrough, 27, of Gary.
Witnesses told police that Kimbrough disregarded a red light and broadsided
Summers.
Police said the impact caused Summers to collide with a light support pole
head-on. Summers was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated, police
said. She was taken to the Methodist Hospital Northlake campus, where she
worked as a lab technician. She remained hospitalized until her death on
Saturday.
Police said the crash remains under investigation but it is known that
Kimbrough was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Kimbrough
sustained minor bleeding, police said.
