Local defrauded by Craigslister

A Chesterton resident looking to rent a residence in Portland, Oreg., appears to have been defrauded by a Craigslist scammer, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, on Saturday the resident reported that on July 16 he’d made e-mail contact with a “Stanley Montgomery” in Louisville, Miss., after Montgomery had represented himself on Craigslist as a property manager for a Portland listing. Montgomery instructed the resident to wire him or his “agents”--“Johnny Evans” or “David Philip,” both of them in Louisville--$1,400 for the first month’s rent and security deposit, then a further $740 for a background check.

The resident did so, then became suspicious, and on investigating learned that the Portland property was legitimate but apparently had been copied by Montgomery and posted to Craigslist “for the purposes of “illegal gain,” police said.

The case has been forwarded to federal authorities, police added.
