A Liberty Township woman was killed Saturday in a two vehicle accident at
the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and C.R. 200W in Liberty Township, the
Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
Police identified the victim as Mildred R. Pratt, 71, a resident of the 200
west block of C.R. 700N, and said that she died on impact of internal
injuries.
According to police, at 5:38 p.m. Pratt was southbound on C.R. 200W when she
stopped for the stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 6, then proceeded into
the intersection, where her Dodge Intrepid was struck in the driver side
door by a GMC Envoy westbound on U.S. 6 and driven by Barbi B. Wasmer, 54,
of Washington Township.
Police said that Wasmer had the right of way.
Pratt’s Intrepid came to rest on the south shoulder of U.S. 6, west of C.R.
200W, while Wasmer’s Envoy came to rest in the eastbound lane of U.S. 6.
Three witnesses advised investigators that Pratt pulled directly into
Wasmer’s path and that Wasmer had no time to brake or otherwise avoid
impact.
Pratt was wearing a seat belt but police said that the crash was not
survivable due to the extent of damage. Wasmer was wearing a seat belt and
her airbag deployed, police said.
Wasmer was treated at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus for minor chest and
knee injuries, police said, while two dogs in her Envoy appeared to have
escaped injury.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, police added.
The Indiana State Police assisted the PCSP with its investigation, police
said, and the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the
scene to extricate the drivers. PSCP Chaplain Jay Birky also assisted
officers with the notification of Pratt’s family.
