A LaPorte man died this morning of injuries sustained on Sunday, after
driving his car off an overpass onto the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte
County, the Indiana State Police said.
The victim was identified as Ryan Joseph Smith, 20.
According to police, at 10:03 p.m. Smith was northbound on Holmsville Road
when for unknown reasons he left the overpass and his 1995 Chevrolet went
airborne, hitting a semi-tractor box trailer eastbound on the Toll Road
beneath the overpass. Smith’s Chevrolet then rolled multiple times through
the median and he was ejected, police said.
The Chevrolet came to rest after hitting a second semi-tractor box trailer.
Smith was airlifted from the Toll Road to Memorial Hospital in South Bend,
where he was pronounced dead early this morning, police said.
The driver of the first semi, Franklin S. Estep, 47, of Sylvania, Ohio, was
not injured, nor was the driver of the second, Tinomir Petkovic, 26, of Des
Plaines, Ill., police said. Neither load was lost.
All east- and westbound lanes of the Toll Road were closed for approximately
four and a half hours for the helicopter landing, cleanup, and
investigation, police said.
