A two-semi crash on the Indiana Toll Road just west of Chesterton congested traffic during the late afternoon rush hour on Monday, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 4:45 p.m. trucker Glenn Christy, 54, of Valparaiso, was eastbound in the right lane of the Toll Road when, approximately two and a half miles west of Chesterton, he slowed for a disabled vehicle on the outside shoulder, then attempted to merge into the left lane, at which time a second semi directly behind him and driven by trucker Mohamed Abid, 56, of Palos Park, Ill., rear-ended his trailer.

The collision caused Christy to lose control of his rig, leave the roadway, and hit the outer guardrail head on.

The right lane of the Toll Road was closed until around 9 p.m., for removal of Christy’s rig and the cleanup of 150 gallons of leaked diesel, police said.

Neither Christy nor Abid was injured in the accident, police said.

Responding to the scene was the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department.
