Two truck drivers were injured early this morning in an accident which forced the closure of I-80/94 in Lake County for nearly three hours, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 2 a.m. semi driver David Mangena, 49, of Berrien Springs, Mich., was eastbound in the far right lane of I-80/94 when, at the 8.4 mile marker, he veered left, striking a second semi in the right center line, being driven by Jose Sierra, 55, of Harrison Township, Mich.

Police said that Sierra’s rig struck the left concrete barrier wall, then slid against the wall for approximately 50 yards before coming to rest, while Mangena’s rig came to a stop on the right shoulder.

Both Mangena and Sierra were transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

“Fatigue is believed to be a factor in this crash,” police said.

All eastbound lanes were closed from approximately 1:50 to 4:30 a.m. for crash cleanup, police said.
