Two South Bend residents were arrested Saturday on a charge of possession of marijuana following an accident on I-94 near Chesterton, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, during Saturday’s snow event a trooper responded to the slide-off of a single vehicle four miles east of the Chesterton exit. On his arrival, the trooper made contact with the driver, Aryal M. Duran, 26, and her passenger, Harold R. Murphy Jr., 34, who advised that they’d already contacted a tow truck and didn’t need assistance.

The trooper, however, detected the odor of burnt marijuana from the vehicle’s interior and on being confronted Duran and Murphy stated that “they had just smoked the marijuana after they were involved in the slide-off, but that they didn't have any more with them or in the vehicle,” police said.

The trooper subsequently found in the vehicle a bag containing 114 grams of marijuana, police said.

Murphy was charged with felony possession of marijuana and Duran with misdemeanor possession and both were transported to Porter County Jail.
