An Indiana State Police trooper was seriously injured early this morning after a motorist suspected of operating while intoxicated struck his parked squad car on I-80/94 in Lake County.

According to police, at 12 a.m. three troopers responded to a one-vehicle accident in the westbound lanes of I-94 at the 7.3 mile marker. The troopers all parked their squad cars in front of the disabled vehicle--which had come to rest partially in the left and left-center lanes--and had also lit approximately 15 flares to alert other motorists, police said.

Trooper Corey Adam was sitting in the driverís seat of his squad car, its emergency lights fully activated, when a 2004 Chevrolet SUV westbound at a high rate of speed struck it, police said. The other two troopers were able to extricate Adam from the vehicle as it was leaking gasoline. Adam sustained serious injuries and was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary.

The driver of the Chevrolet SUV, identified as Cameron D. Geweniger, 30, of Wheaton, Ill., was subsequently arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement, and reckless driving, and was transported to Lake County Jail.
